Real Life V.S. Social Media
SOCIAL MEDIA V.S. REAL LIFE
Go outside. What do you notice? What do you see? People are walking around, looking like mindless zombies. Their heads bending low, their attention and eyes are fixated on their cell phone screen. It's rare to see people these days, actually interacting with each other. It's rare to see children, running around and playing. It's rare to not see people chained to their gadgets.
What has technology and social media done to us?
Maybe the reason the cell phone is called a cell phone because we're trapped in it. It's like a prison cell; you cannot get out. Social media is like a drug. You can never get enough of it.
Our lives now are only focused on social media. Every move, every action should either be posted on Facebook or tweeted on Twitter. We always have the urge to post what food we have for lunch, or what Christmas/Birthday present we got, or what we are doing at the moment. Even trash talking in social media is a thing when you got in a fight with someone. People also like snap chatting everything instead of actually enjoying the company with the people around them. I myself admit that I already did most of these. But that's what we care about right? What the people behind our screens think of us.
What's sad about this is we show the internet that ."yeah, I'm so happy, we're having loads of fun." instead of enjoying the moment. For example, family gatherings. Everything you do with your family has to be posted somewhere on the internet. Why not enjoy your time with them instead of holding your phone? It comes to the point that sharing our lives online is more important than actually living it.
When we see a photo of a group of friends or a family or a photo of someone looking happy, we sometimes say to ourselves, I wish I was happy. I wish I can live like her/him. But behind that all-smiles photo, they're not really happy. They want to show everyone happy for show. We show everyone that we're living our lives and that we are so happy, but in reality, we're not. A lot of people suffer from a lot of problems, yet they show the opposite on the internet.
Another problem is that people, (mostly millennials) like posting their problems on social media instead of actually doing something about it. This just makes matters worse than making it better. Believe it or not, sharing your problems on the internet gives you negative attention.
Social Media destroys your mental health. Because of Social Media; our self-esteem plummets, we become envious of other people's lives and we are obsessed to let people know what is happening in our life. Also, negative posts discourage us a lot. Instead of motivating ourselves to be better, we sigh in dismay and just hope for the best.
Not only does this crush our mental health, but it destroys our relationship with our peers. We don't go out anymore to hang out with our friends, we just lay in bed, scrolling through our phones. We seldomly visit our family, instead, we just rely on Facebook to contact them and keep in touch with them. We don't even talk to our elders anymore, we are too busy to see that they are often lonely and they need someone to talk to. Lastly, we don't talk anymore to the people around us, our minds are too buried in our gadgets.
What has this world come to? We don't need to post to impress others, nor ignore people and be busy with our gadgets all day. Let us all put down our cell phones, log out of social media and communicate with people! Let's stop living in an internet lie.
